Unit MedSurg/Tele & PCU (NOTE: PCU is not currently included in these notes because that unit has turned into ICU Overflow due to COVID) # beds The numbers of bed vary around 28 (can usually hold 25 but had to prepare for a surge due to COVID so they can go up to 28) Certs & Experience Requirements BLS is REQUIRED ACLS is PREFERRED * Candidates MUST have 1 year of experience in the specialty with some previous travel experience required (Therefore, candidates would need at least 15 - 18 months of experience to be considered for this unit) * Ratios Ratios for MedSurg are usually 1 to 6, MAX of 1 to 7 MAX. Manager said it would be very rare if they had 1 to 7 & it would maybe only be 1 nurse w/ 7, the rest would have 6. When things return to normal, ratios in the "clean stepdown" would be PCU staffing ratios which would be 1 to 4. EMR CPSI - Evident Thrive (They feel their EMR is really good & easy to learn!) Charge Nurse Days has a charge nurse, Evening sometimes has a charge nurse, Nights does not have a charge nurse. They have a "senior nurse" on nights. Nurse Aides PCTs. Weekend Requirement Weekend requirement is every other weekend but the manager would consider someone who wants to work more weekends. Weekend shifts are Sat/Sun for all shifts. Holidays Holidays they would work travelers into the perm staff holiday rotation Scrub Color Navy is preferred but black or gray is fine Tele Tele is monitored remotely in the ICU, but the Tele boxes show the patients rhythm. Nurse's Read Strips? No - They do not require MedSurg/Tele nurses to read & interpret strips Drips Insulin, Cardizem, & Amiodarone. They do titrate per protocol but this is vary rare. The titration protocol is hanging on the wall. They would not assign travelers patients with drips unless they had prior experience with drips, therefore experience titrating drips is NOT required. There is 1 physician on call for Family Practice, 1 physician on call for Internal Medicine, & 1 Surgeon on call IV Team No IV Team. There are several staff that are PICC & Midline certified that can assist with difficult IV sticks. Vents/RT 24/7 RT is In-house 24/7 - They manage all vents (but there wouldn't be any vents on this unit) occasionally Cpap or Bipap. RT does all the EKGs, breathing treatments, & ABGs Pharmacy 24/7 Pharmacy is not 24/7 - Omnicell Shifts Perm staff does 8 Hour Shifts. Their biggest need is for evening shift from 3p-11p; however, the manager would consider someone doing 12's if they would agree to work 11a-11p. The first 4 hours from 11am - 2pm they would help out as the "admission nurse", get finger sticks, vitals, etc. then they would take a patient assignment from 3pm - 11pm. The other 12 hour option would be nights from 7pm - 7am. Floating All travelers are required to float to PCU; however, w/o PCU experience they would only assign patients within their skill set.
