How to Celebrate Thanksgiving Away from Home

How-to-Celebrate-Thanksgiving-Away-from-Home

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and some travel nurses and therapists won’t be able to make it home. As a traveler, you may find yourself in a different city or state during this joyous season, but this shouldn’t hinder you from getting into the holiday’s spirit. Celebrate Thanksgiving wherever you are in a few simple ways:

  1. Connect with your family

You may not be able to wine and dine in person, but you can still enjoy their company by setting up a video call during Thanksgiving dinner. Though you can’t have any of their turkey, you can still enjoy talking and laughing with the family.

  1. Find time with your friends who won’t be heading home

Ask your colleagues and friends to have a get together. Chances are, you’re not the only one away from home during Thanksgiving. Together with your friends, you can have a Friendsgiving dinner of your own.

  1. Create new traditions

Who says celebrating Thanksgiving should be limited to a turkey dinner at home? We are not bound by traditional obligations, so everyone can have their own Thanksgiving tradition as long as it stays true to the meaning of the occasion – gratefulness for the blessings we have.

  1. Don’t stress yourself over the holiday

Never let the idea of spending Thanksgiving away from home get you down. Remember the spirit of the holiday, embrace what you have now, and celebrate being in a profession that allows you to care for patients and families during some of the scariest times in their lives.

However you spend the day – with or without your family – make sure you find ways to enjoy your day. Even (and especially) if you’re working a shift at the hospital. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
